Cystic Fibrosis Canada National Awards acknowledge individuals and groups who demonstrate an on-going commitment to the cause.
Today marks the beginning of National Volunteer Week. I want to celebrate this occasion by thanking all of our volunteers for dedicating their time, passion and generosity to our great CF cause.
Cystic Fibrosis Canada could not do our important work for Canadians living with the devastating impacts of this disease without the support of our cross-country network of volunteers. Over the past 53 years, we have taken enormous strides for Canadians with cystic fibrosis. In 1960, babies diagnosed with cystic fibrosis did not live long enough to attend kindergarten. Today, sixty percent of all Canadians with cystic fibrosis are adults. The support and generosity of our volunteers and donors has been absolutely crucial to this success.
Recently, we heard the great news that another province, Nova Scotia, has committed to implementing CF newborn screening. Our volunteers advocated tenaciously there, writing letters to government officials, and interviewing in the media in that province to build public support for CF newborn screening.
Our national partners, Kin Canada, CARSTAR, Advocis, Mac’s Convenience Stores Inc. and Bioguard® volunteer time, and invest hope and funds in everything we do. They are with us every step of the way. Tens of thousands of post-secondary students volunteer in Shinerama every year. Next year will be the 50th anniversary of this innovative fundraiser.
Right now, our 15,000 Chapter volunteers across Canada, and our national partners are in full-swing organizing our national fundraiser, the Great Strides™ walk on Sunday, May 26. Many more are planning hundreds of fundraising events across the country.
We are so grateful for the outstanding commitment of our volunteers that has had such an impact on the lives of Canadians living with cystic fibrosis. Thanks to their investments, Canadians with this disease have one of the highest median survival rates in the world.
Together, we have set our sights squarely on finding a cure.
Cystic Fibrosis Canada's National Individual Awards represent the highest level of volunteer recognition that Cystic Fibrosis Canada bestows. The awards are designed to acknowledge individuals who truly exemplify the Cystic Fibrosis Canada volunteer spirit.
The Chapter Awards are designed to recognize chapters that have demonstrated either an overall excellence throughout the past year in the areas of fundraising, public awareness, volunteer development and partner support, or a particular strength in any one of these categories.
